Does Your Company Need Dedicated Ethernet?

It is no longer feasible in today’s business climate to contemplate running a growing business without a secure and reliable internet connection. The question that remains, however, is which type of internet connection is right for your business. Whether you should choose a broadband connection, a T1 line or Ethernet dedicated internet for your business is a decision that requires careful consideration of several factors.

What Distinguishes These Options?

Broadband internet is essentially the same type of internet connection provided to homes by cable providers, albeit generally with more options available to the company for security and support. If your business requires more than a few simultaneous users or depends on the transfer of large amounts of data over the internet, this is not the best option. If these conditions exist, either T1 or Ethernet dedicated internet will prove more capable and reliable.

In the early days of the internet, T1 lines were the obvious medium to large-sized businesses. T1 lines offered a direct connection through the telephone company to your internet service provider. This type of internet service, delivered over either copper or fiber-optic lines, provided security and assurance against service interruptions. One drawback of T1 lines, however, is speed. A single T1 line can work at speeds up to 1.5 Mbps, and if you needed to speed up your internet service or allow for greater data transfer, you would have to add another T1 line.

Ethernet dedicated internet has a minimum speed of 10 Mbps and can handle speeds of 1 Gbps or greater if necessary. Therefore a single Ethernet connection can deliver the equivalent bandwidth of six T1 lines and is scalable without additional infrastructure improvements. In addition, Ethernet is less expensive to run and maintain than a T1 connection and far more reliable than a simple broadband connection.

Factors to Consider When Deciding Between T1 and Ethernet Internet Connections The following factors are important when choosing between a T1 line and Ethernet dedicated internet:

ñ The need for future scalability

The modern business climate often dictates that internet connections had at their disposal much more bandwidth than necessary 15 years ago, and most single T1 connections are not able to handle the increased data demands easily. Ethernet dedicated internet is less expensive, can be easily applied to both local and wide area networks, and can be easily scaled to meet the demands of your growing business.

Many factors rate consideration when choosing the right type of business internet service, but most important are the present and future needs of the business itself. If you plan to expand your business internally with more staff or externally with more locations, it makes sense to choose an internet connection that can grow with your business. Ethernet dedicated internet offers options for speed and bandwidth and is less expensive and more easily scalable than other options.
